Nintendo Entertainment System (NES) Formation Z
This is an early game from Jaleco where you control a mech who shoots from the group up, and then sometimes becomes a plane for short Time Pilot-esque shooting periods. It isn't the best, but it really isn't that bad. It also never saw a US release.
